  • Cindy Quy of Austin Receives 2018 Drex Foreman Award

    Jun 21, 2018

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) is proud to announce that IIAT Director Cindy Quy was  the recipient of the Drex Foreman Award presented at IIAT’s 121st Annual Conference and Trade Show in San Antonio on June 15. Named after Drex Foreman, who served as the chief executive director of IIAT for more than 30 years, the Drex Foreman Award is the highest honor IIAT bestows annually to an individual who has contributed greatly to the independent agency system.

Quy joined IIAT in 1997 as an administrative assistant to former president Ernie Stromberger. She currently serves as IIAT's Director of Member Experience. "Over the past 21 years, IIAT has benefited greatly from Cindy's innate ability to get people involved, and keep people involved," said IIAT Past President Peter Lauve. "It can't be proven, but Cindy probably knows more independent agents in the state than any person on the planet. And when I say 'knows them,' I don't mean 'knows who they are,' but rather, she knows them on a first name basis and has worked with many of them," he said.

"Cindy's personal integrity and love for what she does exponentially increase her effectiveness and positive influence on our industry," said Peter. "We've all heard it said many times, 'insurance is a people business.'" It's no wonder that the consummate 'people person' has been able to have such a profound effect on our association and industry."

Quy was raised in Stanton, Texas, and attended McMurray University in Abilene, where she met her husband Rick Quy. After graduating, Cindy worked stints at Conoco/DuPont and Rice University. Cindy and Rick have been married 48 years and have two children and four grandchildren.

“I am both terribly pleased and humbled to be included in the company of such esteemed people. I love the association and I love meeting and working with all of our members," said Quy.

  • IIAT Honors Independent Insurance Agent Bob Shepard for Outstanding Political Action Contributions

    Jun 21, 2018

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) is proud to announce that Harlingen independent insurance agent Bob Shepard is the winner of the Paige Eiland Political Action Award presented at IIAT’s 121st Annual Conference and Trade Show in San Antonio.

The Paige Eiland Award recognizes an agent whose political involvement has had a great impact on the independent insurance agency system. The award has only been presented five times since its inception 13 years ago. It was last presented in 2013 to Al Boenker of Fort Worth. The award is named for Paige Eiland of Stanton, Texas, a longtime IIAT member who worked tirelessly on behalf of agents in both state and federal political arenas.

As a long-time member of IIAT, Shepard is a past board member and president of both IIAT and the IIAT Services Boards. He has served on IIAT’s Legislative Committee and most recently served as the chairman of the IIAT IMPACT Board of Trustees. Shepard serves nationally on the IIABA Insurpac Board and has played a critical role through his service on the TWIA Board of Directors. "Bob is known for following through on his commitments, and takes his volunteer leadership roles extremely seriously," said IIAT Governmental Affairs Director Lee Loftis.

As a pioneer in the Republican Party, Shepard was elected to the State Republican Executive Committee (SREC) in the late ‘80s. He has served twice on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He was first appointed by Gov. George W. Bush in 1996 and was reappointed by Gov. Rick Perry in 2005. Shepard served as Chairman of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board from 2006 to 2009. He also served as President of the College for All Texans Foundation. Additionally, Shepard is a past President of the University of Texas-Brownsville Development Board and former Chairman of the Board of Regents of Pan American University in Edinburg.

"Bob has been and continues to be a true servant leader to our industry, his community and business in Texas for over forty years. During his career he has become an influential voice at the Texas State Capitol and in D.C.," said Lee.

  • Independent Insurance Agents of Texas Names William Crocker of Austin Young Agent of the Year

    Jun 21, 2018

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) is proud to announce that William “Billy” Crocker of Higginbotham in Austin was named the André P. Juneau ELITExas Member of the Year at IIAT’s 121st Annual Conference and Trade Show in San Antonio last week. This award is given annually to a young insurance agent in Texas who has achieved success through hard work, community engagement and industry participation in a manner that is considered exceptional for a person of his or her age.

After graduating in 2003 from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in government, Crocker became a broker/analyst for Coldwell Banker in Houston, where he served as an exclusive agent on 16 properties. Crocker’s experience in real estate gave him a platform for managing risks for real estate accounts at USI Insurance Services in Austin, beginning in 2007. As the real estate practice leader for the Austin region, Crocker helped cultivate business opportunities and develop industry-specific coverage programs.

Crocker joined Higginbotham in 2013 where he now serves as Vice President and Real Estate Practice Leader. He is also the incoming Chair of ELITExas and the immediate Past President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Austin. During his time at IIA Austin, he collaborated with IIAT to build a pipeline relationship with the Austin Young Chamber of Commerce to attract young professionals to the insurance industry.

“Like many previous winners, Billy is an agent who has achieved great success at a young age. He’s a great asset to our industry and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in the future,” said IIAT Chair Jeff Brady.

She has been and will continue to be the MVP of TexCap and an integral member of our team. I feel that this award is way over due for Christine,” said TexCap Senior VP and Partner Jim Hamby.

  • Laura Farmer Joining Service Lloyds Insurance Company

    Oct 19, 2017

It’s with mixed emotions that IIAT announces Laura Farmer, CPCU, CIC, will be pursuing a new role at Service Lloyds Insurance Company.

During her time at the association, Laura has managed the ELITExas (Emerging Leaders of Insurance in Texas) Advisory Council and spearheaded programs to promote the insurance industry to younger generations. In 2016, ELITExas took home the Outstanding Breakthrough Award at the Big “I” Fall Leadership Conference in Chicago.

In her new role serving on Service Lloyds' Business Development Team, Laura will be responsible for working with the company’s partner agencies, growing Service Lloyds' business in Central Texas. She’ll also continue to build relationships with Young Agents across Texas and maintain her involvement with ELITExas.

“We are sorry to see Laura go, but excited for her as she starts a new challenge with one of our partner companies. Laura has been an enthusiastic ambassador for independent agents and the IIAT brand,"  said IIAT President & Executive Director Marit Peters. "We look forward to working with her in her new role to continue building on the success of ELITExas and promoting the insurance industry to the younger generation entering the workforce.”

  • IIAT’s Response to Harvey Recovery Czar’s Comments on Insurance Agents

    Oct 03, 2017

AUSTIN, TX — During a Texas Tribune event on Friday, Sept. 29, Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp, named by Governor Abbott to lead the state’s recovery from Hurricane Harvey, commented that the insurance industry, specifically insurance agencies, were waiting on FEMA before paying insurance claims.  Sharp said agents need to “step up” and “write a damn check.”

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) would like to take the opportunity on the heels of Sharp’s comments to clarify the role of a Trusted Choice® independent agent in the claims process. “Independent agents are actively on the ground working tirelessly to help Harvey victims file and resolve insurance claims as expediently as possible,” said IIAT President & Executive Director Marit Peters. “Coordinating coverage among property, flood and wind policies, which are often insured through different companies, can be a complex process.”

Insurance companies pay claims when they are due under an insurance policy. According to the Insurance Council of Texas, insurance companies have already paid out an estimated $2 billion in insurance claims on flooded automobiles and wind damaged homes due to Harvey’s 130-mile-per-hour winds and massive flooding.

IIAT urges all Texans affected by Harvey to contact their insurance agent for assistance. FEMA has provided guidance on applying for disaster assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov and information on insurance processing for flood coverage can be found here (http://www.iiat.org/docs/default-source/government-resources/eligibility-and-flood-insurance.pdf).

  • IIAT Joins Independent Insurance Agents in Victoria and Rockport to Extend Financial Support to Harvey Impacted Communities

    Oct 03, 2017

AUSTIN, TX — In an effort to provide financial relief to two of the communities greatly impacted by Hurricane Harvey, a group of ambassadors from the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) recently joined local independent insurance agents in Victoria and Rockport to provide area leaders with monetary support provided by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA), the national association for independent agents.

IIAT's Governmental Affairs Director, Lee Loftis, presented each community with monetary gift cards to be handed out to those in greatest need. "We know that individuals in these communities are just beginning to rebuild and may need the assistance that a small financial gift can provide. We hope that these funds will help lift the spirits of those in distress and let them know that independent insurance agents across the state and country are thinking about them during this difficult time," said Loftis.

Agents met with Glen Dry, Pastor of Sportsman’s Church at Son Valley Ranch, in Victoria, and heard the story of Leo De La Garza, whose home was completely destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. De La Garza received $1,900 from FEMA, far from the amount needed to rebuild his home.

In Rockport, GSM Insurors have been working closely with Rockport Mayor Pro-Tem Patrick Rios and Fulton Mayor Jimmy Kendrick on area relief efforts. Outside of GSM's offices, TWIA has set up a mobile claims unit to assist individuals with their insurance needs. "Rockport has made a lot of progress in a short period of time. However, it will take years for our community to be fully restored. We are grateful to IIAT and IIABA for their generosity," said GSM Insurance Vice President Travis McDavid.
