Tackling Lawsuit Abuse: How You Can Support the Lone Star Economic Alliance’s Tort Reform Efforts

If you know me, you’ve heard me emphasize the significance of lawsuit abuse and tort reform as one of the few areas the legislature can influence to reduce insurance costs for our clients. One potential solution that has been in progress for some time is third-party litigation funding (TLPF). I’m still hoping that a rule change will soon be implemented in the Texas Administrative Code. The Supreme Court Advisory Committee is meeting in early November, and I've been informed that TPLF will be on the agenda.

Another possible fix is a new effort spearheaded by the Texas Trucking Association (TTA) and Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) called the Lone Star Economic Alliance (LSEA). This alliance aims to reduce insurance costs by addressing the root causes of lawsuit abuse. IIAT has worked with TLR before, and they do incredible work in this space.

IIAT was an early supporter of LSEA and contributed funds to launch its campaign. When it started, LSEA had the support of roughly 35 associations and organizations. There are now more than 350.

Lone Star Economic Alliance’s Goals:

  1. Push one or more bills through the legislature that target predatory actions by personal injury attorneys.
  2. Get as many businesses, organizations, and associations as possible to add their name to the list of interested parties. The goal is to encourage members of the House/Senate to pass this bill(s) by showing them businesses IN THEIR DISTRICT are part of the LSEA.

My Ask of Each of You:

  1. Please consider adding your agency to the list of LSEA supporters.
  2. Ask your clients to add their names as well. (Use this recruitment template as a guide to help get support.)
  3. Please let me know if you add your name to the list or want your name added to the list. (I’d like our association to get credit for any IIAT members joining LSEA and keep track of their support.

As always, please get in touch with me with any questions; I’m here to help.

Sincerely,

Regan Ellmer
