It's Hurricane Season -- TWIA Is Ready to Respond

Hurricane season is here. No matter the forecast each year, June is prime time to ensure we are all ready to respond when a hurricane hits.

TWIA Is Ready to Respond
We have secured access to $4.5 billion in funding and updated our Catastrophe (CAT) Incident Response Plan so we can quickly and effectively respond to policyholders’ needs if a hurricane hits the Texas coast. For more than 50 years, TWIA has never been unable to pay claims.

  • TWIA’s CAT Plan – At the heart of our storm preparedness program is our CAT Plan. It outlines how TWIA prepares for, responds to, and aids in the recovery process for catastrophic weather disasters. The CAT Plan is updated each year and published along with the TWIA Annual Report.
  • Funded to $4.5 Billion – TWIA has secured access to funding totaling $4.5 billion for the 2023 hurricane season. This meets our statutory funding requirement to respond to a 1-in-100 year storm season. Learn more on our Funding page.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips for Coastal Residents
Take a moment to review our Hurricane Preparedness page and share it with clients. As you know, following simple tips like the ones below can make a huge difference in a homeowner’s ability to recover and rebuild after a storm.

  • Have Enough Insurance – Ensure you have both flood and windstorm insurance.
    • Flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.
    • Most windstorm insurance providers, including TWIA, are unable to accept applications for new or increased coverage when a hurricane enters the Gulf (learn more).
  • Avoid Surprises – Thoroughly read and understand what a TWIA policy covers.
    • Verify your contact information, know your deductible, understand your endorsements, and ensure you have enough insurance to cover the cost to rebuild your home.
  • Secure Your Property – Don’t delay general maintenance to your roof or property. Install storm shutters and roof straps, trim trees and clear gutters, and reinforce garage doors.
