Leadership Lessons on Resilience, Confidence, and Values from Nicole Malachowski

At IIAT’s Joe Vincent Management Seminar on January 26, 2026, members heard an unforgettable message from Nicole Malachowski – combat veteran, former White House Fellow, and the first woman pilot on the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Sponsored by Liberty Mutual & Safeco, her session, “Breaking Barriers: Conquering Self-Doubt and Cultural Paradigms,” challenged leaders to rethink failure, confidence, and the power of personal values.

Failure Isn’t the End – It’s the Entry Point

Malachowski opened by reframing failure, sharing how an early mistake nearly ended her dream of becoming a fighter pilot. Instead of defining her, that setback became foundational. Her message was clear: failure builds discipline, humility, and resilience – traits essential for leaders navigating uncertainty.

Believe Those Who Believe in You

Throughout her career, Malachowski faced moments of self-doubt, even when others saw her potential more clearly than she did. From mentors who pushed her forward to teammates who refused to let her quit, she emphasized a simple but powerful truth: you’re rarely 100% ready for the next challenge—growth requires trust, including trust in those who see your strengths.

Ask for Help and Offer It

One of the most resonant lessons came from her Thunderbird training, where asking for help ultimately strengthened both her performance and her team. High-performing organizations, she noted, are built on trust, accountability, and a shared commitment to excellence, values that mirror the collaborative strength of the independent agency system.

Lead with Values, Not Scripts

Malachowski closed with a reminder that leadership isn’t about following a prescribed path. “Nobody wants to lead a scripted life,” she said. Defining and living by personal values - courage, compassion, and curiosity - allows leaders to break internal barriers and challenge outdated cultural norms.

Key Takeaways

  • Failure is often the price of meaningful progress

  • Mentorship and teamwork accelerate growth

  • Asking for help is a leadership strength, not a weakness

  • Clear values guide confident decisions in uncertain times

For agency leaders, Malachowski’s message reinforced a shared truth: breaking barriers starts from within and the impact extends far beyond ourselves.
