Why Advocacy Takes Center Stage at This Year’s Volunteer Leadership Symposium

Independent insurance agents have always played an important role in helping Texans understand risk, protect what they’ve built, and navigate a changing insurance marketplace. But today, that role is more important than ever.

From rising insurance costs to market pressures, legal system challenges, and increasing legislative attention on insurance issues, the decisions made at the Texas Capitol can directly impact independent agencies, their clients, and the future of the independent agency system.

That’s why this year’s IIAT Volunteer Leadership Symposium will focus entirely on advocacy.

Held during INSURCON on Monday, June 15, from 1:30–4:30 p.m., the symposium will bring together IIAT volunteer leaders, Board members, IMPACT donors, INSURCON attendees, and select guests for a focused discussion on the issues facing independent agents in Texas. We encourage all INSURCON attendees to join us. Please complete the online RSVP.

Led by IIAT and Marquez Public Affairs, the session will cover key legislative challenges, practical ways to connect with lawmakers, and how agents can better explain the real-world impact of policy decisions.

Attendees will also break into working groups to discuss what they’re hearing from clients, explore best- and worst-case legislative scenarios, and help shape IIAT’s advocacy priorities, member resources, and IMPACT engagement strategy.

After the symposium, IIAT will provide access to a Government Affairs resource portal with talking points, advocacy tips, scripts, and tools members can use when connecting with legislators and staff.

Independent agents need to be in the room when decisions are made. This symposium is your opportunity to help strengthen our voice, protect what you’ve built, and make sure the independent agency community has a seat at the table.

The fight is coming. Independent agents need to be ready.

Don't wait until the session is underway. Don't wait until harmful proposals gain momentum. Don't wait until decisions are already being made without us.
